I just came across this very polished 2D shooting game called Emotigeddon, which inventively uses the web generation's most gleefully overused tool - emoticons - as its fodder.
Playing as a happy face, you have to take down all the sad faces that have taken over the world. In a sense, then, this is an accurate real-world simulation, as well as a tasty fast-paced shooter.
This one's not free, but the makers offer a demo and plenty of screenshots and videos to let you make your mind up. Since everything else is free these days, these guys probably deserve the money just for having the nerve to ask for it.
I'll now end this post without using an emoticon to try and be smart and ironic.
