Galactic Commandos

Galactic Commandos is a bit gentle for our tastes, but it's the most polished puzzle-platformer we've encountered in months. Well done E4.

You control a trio of robot commandos sent to investigate (and subsequently sabotage) a giant alien craft. Say hello to the furtive Scout, upstanding Shield and cigar-puffing H.Weap.

Scout is the most nimble of the team, able to double-jump and balance on slender blue ledges; he can also backstab unsuspecting aliens, and goes invisible when left to his own devices.

Shield carries a forcefield emitter which reflects incoming fire back at the assailant, and his pistol shots trigger certain switches. H.Weap is the muscle, as his name implies, with a powerful rocket launcher and ground-pound move which bust through red blocks and cracked surfaces.

The arrow keys move and jump, Z attacks, X deploys a robot's signature ability and number keys 1-3 switch robots. As you'd expect, you'll need to use each robot in concert to prevail e.g. by using Shield to open a trapdoor, sending Scout down to assassinate the patroling guard, and finally calling on H.Weap to clear the onward route.

It's all very redolent of Lost Vikings, an antique puzzle-platformer we covered in our visual history of the genre. Not as hard, though.
