It's not every day you get to blog probably the greatest Mario homage ever coded. Hats off to Newgrounds user Runouw and his team.
Super Mario 63 is an epic 2D remastering of Super Mario 64, crown prince of early 3D platforming and the nearest gaming's ever come to crack cocaine.
The remaster packs a brand new story (bludgeoned here and there by forgivable typos) featuring old hands Bowser and Princess Peach plus new faces, detail-rich backdrops (some familiar, some less so) and all the floating platforms, Goombas, turtle shells, cap power-ups and question mark boxes we used to know and love.
Mario has most of his 64-era moves - triple-jump, butt-slam and tornado-spin - plus the Fludd watercannon backpack from Super Mario Sunshine. Even the classic Mario soundtrack and effects have made the cut.
And to top it all off, there's a level editor. This game just doesn't stop giving. Users can share their levels by copy-pasting the code, as in Pencil Racer 3 - here's a few to get you started.
Game of the week, easily. Give the plumber's other browser-based outings a look when you've a moment.

Hmmm. It's not as good as I hoped it would. The controls are a bit floaty and imprecise and I'm struggling to see how that first level is anything like any of Mario64.
You heathen! :P
