E4's just served up an absolute humdinger of a historical turn-based strategy game. Take control of the Viking, English and Norman armies as you fight it out for the throne of 11th century Britain.

Each battle unfolds in stages upon a 2D plane divided into five tiers. Order your men around by clicking their icons on the map at bottom, then put those orders into action by clicking "Execute Commands".

Flanking, soldier morale and army formation all come into play, and there are bloodthirsty animations to boost the immersion factor. In a neat touch, attacking, charging, taunting and firing arrows all have their own minigame.

To taunt, for instance, you have to type in an appropriately nasty remark as fast as you can. We've never been called an "onion-eyed oaf" before.

Try the anime-tastic Epic Battle Fantasy and Plants vs Zombies if this is too sober in tone. Alternatively, do battle amidst the waves.
